Whether it is keeping quality high and costs low, or ensuring a smooth installation process against tight timeframes, Granada offers the very best in commercially focused secondary glazing.

Ecclesiastical

Granada’s ability to design arched and truly bespoke secondary glazing makes us an ideal choice for preserving the heritage and character of a building, with churches being no exception.

From Grade II listed churches to palaces and even castles, we’ve worked with all manner of ecclesiastical properties to get precisely the right results.

In Chesterfield, we specified slim horizontal sliding sashes (SS2) and fixed removable panels (LO) to line through with the existing mullions and transoms. A low emissivity glass was chosen to achieve an optimum U value of 1.868W/m2K. The effect was a dramatic reduction in heating costs and ensured a comfortable environment for the congregation.

Even without the cultural and historical significance, the architecture of Bishopthorpe Palace alone warrants a Grade I Listed status. The residence of the Archbishop of York since the 13th Century, the illustrious property required a careful planning and implementation plan to improve its functionality and thermal performance.

When award-winning contractors, Simpson, looked at secondary glazing, they were already aware of the work carried out by Granada in York on behalf of Bootham School, a renowned independent Quaker boarding school in the city.

After careful discussion and consideration, the stunning stately home and historic house next to the River Ouse was fitted with Heritage range windows in two phases over a period of 11 months.

Hotels & Leisure

Hotels and leisure businesses benefit greatly from secondary glazing’s thermal and noise insulation properties.

Premier Inn, one of the most prolific hotel builders in the UK, has extremely strong corporate values and places the promise of a good night’s sleep at the heart of its offering. We help them to deliver on that promise.

Not only does the secondary glazing reduce noise by a substantial level, complementing the existing primary window, adding a void to stop sound travelling inwards, it also increases the warmth and security of the room.

Well fitted secondary glazing offers the most effective noise insulation and outperforms doubling glazing significantly. To put this into values and figures, the U-Value has gone from 5.5 to 0.7; the lower the value, the better the material is as a heat insulator.

Healthcare

Healthcare assignments we help to deliver are synonymous with quality and efficiency – both in terms of cost and time management. Our ethos is simple – to mean what we say and to be the best in what we do: source, supply and install quality glazing products.

Energy transfer and heat control are becoming increasingly important in the medical profession, where a trend towards temperature-controlled medicines also means the efficacy of treatments or the validity of test results are heat-dependent.

In addition to the benefits of reducing draughts and energy bills, secondary glazing can also play a pivotal role in hospitals in reducing the spread of bacteria. A smooth, clinically cleanable surface prevents the build-up of dust particles and anti-ligature surfaces prevent unnecessary hand use or unauthorised access.

In Sheffield, two major hospitals were the first in the UK to utilise an electrically charged ‘blink glass’ in a secondary glazing application to add a privacy and hygiene barrier between treatment bays.

The speed and simplicity of the system made it a firm favourite with the patients, whilst the cleanliness and effectiveness also impressed administrators and clinicians.

ISG’s award-winning redevelopment work at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital, London, placed comfort and temperature control at its very heart. The work in post-operative care and recovery suites is the second time Granada has worked with the hospital to help them achieve outstanding results.

The refurbishment work needed to be non-disruptive, sustainable and provide a beautiful finish. Granada Secondary Glazing products provided exactly what was needed. By utilising a clear, smooth surface, the hygiene standards are easy to maintain.

Until recently, the Nottingham Queens Medical Centre was the largest hospital in the UK, and the largest teaching hospital in Europe. With such a large number of patients to deal with, the hospital administrators were keen to ensure a newly refurbished research centre, together with haematology and post-operative recovery suites, provided as much comfort as possible.

With the existing primary single-glazed window offering low thermal insulation, Granada Secondary Glazing recommended a double-glazed hinged unit, effectively providing triple-glazing and offering the maximum efficiency for warmth and temperature control.

Social Housing

Whether it’s bringing warmth and comfort to hotel rooms; improving the sound quality in recording studios; enlightening national treasures or improving schools and hospitals, we are the people the renovation industry turns to.

Our commercial teams specialise in Churches, Education and other specialist areas such as Social Housing. The size and scale of these projects may be different, but the professionalism and attention to detail is just the same, from design to survey, installation to aftercare, our full service, customer-care ethos remains true every step of the way.

Providing comfortable and relaxing housing is one of the key responsibilities of a landlord, to ensure tenants will be happy in their home.

Granada helps to ensure tenants are warm and homes comfortable, by keeping the heat in rather than it escaping through the existing windows.

Quality of life is also improved due to the amount of external noise entering the home being cut right down – enabling tenants to relax and gain a good night’s sleep. Tenants feel safer and more secure thanks to an added layer of security deterring would-be intruders. Installations can also help to reduce insurance premiums.

We believe that by improving buildings and the comfort of tenants, desirability is increased and landlords gain a reputation for providing good properties within the local community.

Offices

By installing secondary glazing, architects are able to upgrade the thermal and acoustic insulation of office space to make the noise from below as minimal as possible for the office workers above. Often, the thermal insulation also dramatically improves the landlord’s chances of finding a new long-term tenant.

Whether it is refurbish developments in the heart of the City, or new developments near roads and airports, secondary glazing greatly helps in commercial property changes of use. As prime city centre real estate, many buildings hold a high value, but go in and out of favour. Granada’s involvement in the Category A fitout of newly released properties help owners make the most of their valuable investments.

Education, Universities & Student Accomodation

Granada has an extensive track record with schools, universities and student accomodation.

A secure, quiet and comfortable environment is possibly the most important characteristic of a place of learning. Be it pupils, teachers, students or lecturers, everyone needs to be able to concentrate on what matters, and secondary glazing can achieve exactly that.

Noise reduction is one of the most regularly commented on benefits of secondary glazing. Unlike homes, schools buildings are covered by stringent legislation. The rules, the Education (School Premises) Regulations 2012, stipulate minimum standards for school premises, including: “Each room in a school building must have acoustic conditions and insulation against disturbance by noise appropriate to its normal use.”

The Education (School Premises) Regulations also stipulate that ventilation capable of providing at least eight litres of fresh air per second per occupant is required for all teaching areas, and that all workplaces should be adequately ventilated to provide sufficient quality of fresh or purified air and to prevent the build up of stale, hot or humid air.

Such rules guide schools against just sealing up windows, so the addition of a secure inner panel that also allows access to the original frame for ventilation is another benefit.

Schools and colleges are also covered by the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, which outline provisions that must be made in relation to the work environment. Provisions that are covered by these regulations include staff rooms, weather protection, noise, lighting, heating temperature, and ventilation.

It is important to consider all the factors, but it is also important not to get overwhelmed by the choices available. As the largest specialist manufacturer, supplier and installer of secondary glazing services in the UK, we’re seeing the way commercial properties and home owners are benefiting, and we’re delighted to see those benefits being embraced by the education sector.

Heritage & Listed Buildings

Listed Building is a widely used status, applied to around half a million buildings in the UK. There are three levels of listing, selected for special architectural, historical or cultural significance.

Over the past 20 years, we’ve had the great pleasure of helping to restore some of these national treasures, from the Category A listed Stirling Castle to the Grade I listed buildings of Oxford University.

We offer a comprehensive range of frame styles and colours, enabling the most sympathetic of designs. The perfect fitting of your new windows and respect for your property are among our highest priorities, and we provide full after sales service.

On heritage and more traditional properties, the styling speaks volumes. And whether your building is Edwardian, Victorian or Georgian, our windows will deliver sound and energy efficiency, as well as respect for tradition.

Residential Housing

With housing prices spiralling, and demand for homes remaining high, we work with a number of businesses developing new homes for residential use.

The benefits of secondary glazing are equally as appropriate for new buyers as for those improving an existing home, and can make all the difference in changing a property close to a distracting noise source – roads, railways, airports etc., – into something desirable and comfortable.
