Granada Glazing designed and specified an acoustic solution to block road noise penetrating the primary windows. This student accommodation in Sheffield’s busy city centre houses over 535 students. The £24m project, based on Denby Street, is located near Sheffield United’s football ground on Bramall Lane.

Granada’s secondary glazing can reduce noise levels by up to 80% which is equivalent to 54dB. To achieve the optimum acoustic performance, we advised installing acoustic laminated glass and an air cavity of 200mm between glazing layers. Acoustic laminated glass was also used having been developed to reduce low-frequency sound waves that are typically emitted by traffic.

To match the function and look of the primary window system, we manufactured and installed heritage hinged units stacked on top of a heritage lift-out. These secondary glazing units can be opened to give access for cleaning, maintenance and ventilation when required. A restrictor was installed on the heritage hinged unit to prevent it from opening fully into the room. As we manufacture on-site at our 40,000 square foot manufacturing facility, we can tailor our products to match our clients’ needs and requirements.

Products: Heritage hinged units and stacked lift outs with 8.8mm acoustic laminate glass.
